Collema coccophorum

Description : Flora (1985: 134).
N: Hawke's Bay (Wairoa), Wellington (Tararua Ra.). S: Otago (Karitane), Southland (Springhills, Shark's Tooth, Manapouri). Rather poorly collected. On clay or rock (both limestone and siliceous rocks and on soil derived from these), in damp shaded habitats (stream beds, banks etc.). Known also from Europe, North America, Morocco, East Africa, Mexico, Paraguay, Argentina and Australia (Degelius 1954, 1974; Goward et al. 1994b; Brodo et al. 2001; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Schultz et al. 2004). Collema pulposum var. uniseptatum. Holotype: New Zealand. Hawke's Bay, Wairoa, forest margin on soil, 1933, E.A. Hodgson ZA 231 – W. For further discussion of this taxon see Degelius (1954: 188).

Collema coccophorum is characterised by: the saxicolous/terricolous habit; the small, foliose to subcrustose thallus, with densely verrucose upper surface; abundant, sessile apothecia with verrucose or lobulate thalline margins; and 1-septate ascospores, (13–)15–22(–26) × (4.5–)6.5–8.5(–9) μm.
