Exochorda racemosa
ζ*Exochorda racemosa (Lindley) Rehder ζ* or a hybrid of it has been collected wild at Kaiapoi, N. Canterbury. The identity is slightly in doubt because, although the specimen has the characteristic 5-angled and deeply furrowed, woody capsules of Exochorda Lindley, it is the fls that provide the main specific characters and these are absent. However, E. racemosa and its very similar hybrid E. × macrantha (Lemoine) C. Schneider are the usual taxa cultivated in Canterbury and elsewhere in N.Z. A deciduous shrub with lvs entire on reproductive shoots; fls appearing before or with the lvs, 3-4 cm diam.; petals white and clawed; stamens 15-25. (E. China, 1988).
