Phrygilanthus raoulii (Tiegh.) Engl.
Mullerina raoulii Tiegh. loc. cit. 42, 1895, 25.
This was based on specimens from Bay of Islands, Raoul on Metrosideros; and Whangaroa, A. Cunningham on Metrosideros and Vitex. The infl. is said to be terminal, the fls 5-merous. Van Tieghem says the sp. was confused by Cunningham and Raoul with Elytranthe tetrapetala. No specimens have been seen or collected by N.Z. botanists of later date.
GENERA OF LORANTHOIDEAE
Van Tieghem's genera, as far as N.Z. representatives are concerned, may be keyed as follows:
1 Ovary 2-(6)-loculed; fertilized embryosac reaching only to basis of style2
Ovary 1-loculed; fertilized embryosac reaching nearly to stigma4
2 Tepals becoming free to basePERAXILLA
Tepals remaining united in lower part3
3 Pedicels with single bractALEPIS
Pedicels with 1 bract and 2 bracteolesTRILEPIDEA
4 Staminal filaments much-narrowed at insertion of versatile anther5
Staminal filaments not so narrowed, anther not versatile6
5 Infl. AxillaryHOOKERELLA
Infl. TerminalMULLERINA
6 Pollen 5-lobed; calyculus well-developedILEOSTYLUS
Pollen hemispheric; calyculus ill-developedTUPEIA
Van Tieghem assigns the N.Z. spp. as follows: PERAXILLA - colensoi, haastii, tetrapetala, uniflora. ALEPIS - flavida. TRILEPIDEA - adamsii, ralphii. ILEOSTYLUS - kirkii, micranthus. TUPEIA - antarctica. HOOKERELLA - tenuiflora. MULLERINA - raoulii.
No adequate diagnosis is given of P. haastii, P. uniflora, T. ralphii, I. kirkii, and these remain incertae sedis. I. kirkii is based on specimens collected by Kirk near Auckland, but there are no specimens so named in Kirk's herb. at W.
