Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, Pd± red; containing: atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major), 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, 2'- O -methylphysodic acid (minor), alectoronic acid, physodalic acid and protocetraric acid (present or absent).
N: North Auckland (Whangarei). Gisborne (Mt Hikurangi), Taranaki (Mt Taranaki), Wellington (Ohakune). S: Nelson (Crusader Bluff), Marlborough (Hapuka River), Canterbury (Motunau I., Arthur's Pass, Kaituna Valley Banks Peninsula), Otago (Horse Ra., Trotters Gorge, Mihiwaka, Mt Cargill, Bethune's Gully Dunedin, Flagstaff Hill, Swampy Summit, Saddle Hill, Mt Charles Otago Peninsula, Rongahere Gorge, Roxburgh, Alexandra), Southland (The Wilderness, Greenhills near Bluff, Waikoau River TeWae Wae Bay). On rock, rotten logs dead wood, pine trees, mountain and silver beech and subalpine scrub. Known also from China and the far east of Asia, Australia, Hudson Bay, and Oregon (Rassadina 1971; Elix 1980, 1992; Brodo 1989; McCune et al. 1997; Kantvilas et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Hypogymnia pulverata is characterised by: the corticolous/saxicolous habit; and the sorediate lobes with a mainly solid medulla.
