Hypogymnia billardierei

Description : Flora (1985: 190).
Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, Pd−; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major), oxyphysodic acid (major) and alectoronic acid (tr.) (Elix 1989: No. 181).
S: Canterbury (Hanmer, Lake Tekapo, Hooker Valley Mt Cook), Otago (Sylvan Lake, Jordan River, Paradise, Naseby, Trotters Gorge, Mt Watkin, Sullivan's Dam Dunedin, Manuka Gorge). On bark (Betula pendula, Discaria, Dracophyllum longifolium, Leptospermum scoparium, fenceposts) rarely on rock, s.l. to 500 m. Known also from Australia (Elix 1980, 1992; Kantvilas et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Hypogymnia billardierei is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the contiguous, placodioid nature of the compact lobes; and the solid medulla.
