Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow→red, C−, KC+ red, Pd+ yellow-orange; containing norstictic (major), stictic (minor), and connorstictic (minor) acids.

S: Nelson (Tasman Mts, Mt Owen, Cobb Valley, Matakitaki Valley), Westland (Franz Josef), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass, Banks Peninsula, Kirkliston Ra.), Otago (Park Pass, Arrowtown, The Remarkables, Hyde Rock, Old Man Ra., Alexandra, Poolburn, Lake Onslow, Rock & Pillar Ra., Lamb Hill, Pulpit Rock Silver Peaks, Mt Cargill, Abbott's Hill, Mac's Valley, Otago Heads, Lee Stream, Maungatua, Kuriwao), Southland (West Dome, Homer Saddle). A: (Mt Eden). C: (Mt Lyall). M: On subalpine to high-alpine rocks (greywacke and schist), less commonly on coastal rocks, s.l. to 2080 m; the most common species of Lecidea found in alpine regions in New Zealand (Hertel 2001a). Known also from Kerguelen, Marion I., Prince Edward Is, South Georgia, SE Australia and Tasmania and Tierra del Fuego (Dodge 1948; Hertel 1984b, 1987b, 1989b, 1997, 2001a; Rambold 1989; Øvstedal & Gremmen 2001; McCarthy 2003c, 2006), and Mt Ruwenzori in Uganda at 4480 m (Hertel 2001a).

Lecidea lygomma is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the robust thallus (0.2–0.7 mm thick); the appressed to subimmersed apothecia (never constricted at base); the I− medulla; the dark-brown to brown-black hypothecium; large ascospores (10–17 × 5–8.5 μm); and the norstictic acid chemosyndrome in the medulla. Diagnostic differences between L. lygomma and L. lapicida are discussed by Hertel (1997: 104, tab. 1).
