Pittosporum buchananii Hook.f.
Type locality: given by Hooker, apparently in error, as "from near Tongariro (cultivated in Wellington) Buchanan."
Shrub or tree up to 6 m. tall; branchlets slender; young branchlets and lvs ± pubescent. Lvs alt., submembr., elliptic-oblong to elliptic or broad-elliptic; acute to acuminate or obtuse on same plant; lamina 6-13 × 3-5 cm., sts slightly undulate, on petiole 1-2 cm. long. Fls axillary, solitary or paired, on pedicels 6-20 mm. long. Sepals 4-5 mm. long, ovate-oblong, obtuse. Petals c. 1 cm. long, dark red, narrow with long claw. Capsules up to 1 cm. long, subglobose, on pedicels 1-2 cm. long.
DIST.: N. Mangonui County; Mount Egmont; Wellington.
In the type cover in K is one sheet with 2 pieces, one in fl., one in fr., labelled "New Zealand". The lvs are imperfect, c. 6 × 2-3 cm., on petioles c. 6 mm. long. The subfloral lvs are c. 4 × 2 cm., the capsules c. 1 cm. long. The material Hooker dealt with probably came from Mangonui. Specimens attributed to this sp. show a considerable range of If form and the status of the sp. requires further study.
