Ovary superior, 2-5-loculed; placentae parietal or axile, ovules ∞. Fr. us. a loculicidal capsule; seeds us. immersed in viscid pulp, embryo minute, endosperm cop. Trees shrubs or lianes with alt. or whorled simple exstipulate lvs. Family widespread (absent from America) with some 10 genera and > 200 spp.
