Gentiana concinna Hook.f.
Type: K, J. D. Hooker.
Annual with much-branched erect or ascending stems up to 12 cm. long. Basal lvs ∞, close-set, coriac.; lamina ± 8-20 × 3-7 mm., oblong-spathulate to linear-oblong, ± fleshy, often recurved, gradually narrowed into a broad flat petiole. Cauline lvs similar, smaller. Fls solitary in axils of upper lvs, often 8, c. 8-12 mm. (us. distinctly smaller than in G. cerina), sessile or shortly pedicelled. Calyx c. 1/3 corolla-length, cut 3/4 way into linear-oblong, obtuse lobes. Corolla white streaked with red or purple or altogether red; rotate to subcampanulate, lobes narrow- to obovate-oblong, obtuse, 2-3 mm. wide.
DIST.: A.
Cheeseman (Man. N.Z. Fl. 1925, 735) separates G. concinna from G. cerina mainly "by being annual, by the more erect mode of growth, and by the smaller size of all its parts."
Kirk (T.N.Z.I. 27, 1895, 339) under G. cerina has: " Forma concinna. Usually annual. Stems numerous, 1 in.-3 in. long, densely crowded. Leaves all linear-oblong, obtuse, 1/4 in.-1/2 in. long. Flowers solitary, small, in axils of upper leaves. Calyx segments shorter than the corolla. Hab. On masses of Trichocolea tomentella and other Hepaticae.
"The three forms mentioned [suberecta, cerina, concinna] pass into each other by the most insensible gradations, although the extremes present a wide difference. Sir Joseph Hooker agrees with me in considering it impossible to separate G. concinna specifically." I have not found Hooker's reference.
