Zizania palustris

ξZ. palustris L. ξAnnual, erect tufts, c. 150 cm, rooting at nodes, with flat leaves and large rather narrow panicles. Leaf-blades 20-40 cm × 3-10 mm, with strong midrib abaxially; margins finely toothed. Panicle 30-40 cm, upper branches with ♀ spikelets, lower branches with ♂ spikelets. A North American species found once in a waterway CHR 156971A,B F. Johansen Tirohia-Rotokohu Drainage Board, Paeroa, 7.12.1966. It is now eradicated [Esler, A. E., Liefting, L. W. and Champion, P. D. Biological Success and Weediness of the Noxious Plants of New Zealand, M.A.F. (1993)]. First recorded for N.Z. under the name Z. aquatica L. by Healy, A. J. Standard Common Names for Weeds in N.Z. 141 (1969).
