Lachnagrostis pilosa subsp. nubifera Edgar
; Holotype: CHR 134107! R. A. Falla Webling Bay, Auckland Islands, early Jan. 1963.
Leaf-blade flat, or rather harsh and involute above in plants from Antipodes Id. Culm usually included within uppermost leaf-sheath, internodes finely scabrid. Lemma 1.5-2 mm, with dense short hairs throughout; awn (0.5)-1-3.5 mm, straight, from upper ⅓ of lemma. Palea ≈ lemma, nerves distinct. Callus hairs dense, very short, to 0.5 mm, ⅕-¼ length of lemma. Rachilla prolongation to 0.5 mm, tipped by hairs to c. 1 mm. Anthers 0.5-0.8 mm.
Ant., A. Coastal, on margins of forest or in open scrub, or in damp ground at margins of tussock grassland or among sedges.
Endemic.
In specimens of L. pilosa subsp. nubifera from Auckland Is the rachilla is often terminated by a rudimentary second floret consisting of a short lemma only.
Plants of L. pilosa subsp. nubifera differ from those of subsp. pilosa, and also from subantarctic L. leptostachys, in the shorter, more densely hairy lemma with a short, straight (not geniculate) awn and palea = lemma rather than c. ½ length of lemma. Leaves of plants of L. pilosa subsp. nubifera on the Auckland Is are much wider than those of L. leptostachys but on Antipodes Id the leaves of subsp. nubifera may be almost as narrow as those of L. leptostachys.
