AGROSTIDEAE

Annual or perennial herbs. Ligule membranous. Leaf-blade linear, flat or convolute. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets 1-several-flowered, laterally compressed; usually disarticulating below each floret. Glumes usually persistent, (except Holcus), usually > adjacent lemmas, often as long as spikelet, commonly membranous and shining, margins thin, hyaline. Lemma hyaline to coriaceous and often with thin shiny margins, (3)-5-11-nerved, often with a geniculate, dorsal awn. Lodicules 2, free. Stamens 3. Stigmas 2. Caryopsis mostly ellipsoid; hilum usually round or oval; endosperm sometimes soft, occasionally liquid.
