Epilobium simulans Allan

E. simulans Allan sp. nov. 

Type: BD 76098, leg. H. H. Allan 5/12/48 in fl. and fr.

Laxly branched open spreading plant with woody stock; stems up to ± 30 cm. long; branches ± wiry; branchlets slender, at wide angles, evenly and rather sparsely pubescent, pale green, drying pale brown. Lvs opp., distant, floral alt., on slender flat petioles up to 4 mm. long. Lamina elliptic to oblong to obovate-oblong (all forms may be on same individual) 10-20 × 3-6 mm., thin palish green, glab.; margins distinctly denticulate. Fls 5-10 mm. diam., distributed along stems and branches; calyx ± 3 mm. long, divided nearly to base, lobes ovate, acuminate or acute; petals white, ± 5 mm. long. Peduncles 25-30-(50) mm. long, slender, ± pubescent; capsules slender, white-pubescent, remaining pubescent on angles (20)-25-30 mm. long. Seeds smooth.

DIST.: S. Open tall tussock-grassland at Lindis Pass and neighbourhood.

The plant came "true" from seed in my garden; it has an unusual combination of characters linking the Sparsiflorae and Dermatophyllae.
