Type locality: Bay of Islands. Type: K, "in shady woods on the hills above the Kawakawa River", R. Cunningham, 1833.

Laxly branched shrub to 1 m. tall. Branchlets greyish brown, finely pubescent, length of internodes c. 3 × diam. Lvs spreading, 2-5 cm. × 5-15 mm. (often wide range on one plant), ovate-oblong to narrow-lanceolate, subcoriac., rather light yellowish green; lf-bud without sinus; lamina subacute, entire, glab. except for minute pubescence at extreme base. Infls lateral, simple, slender, to 2 × lf-length, peduncle c. 1 cm. Fls rather openly arranged, pedicels 2-3 mm., mostly > narrow ciliolate bracts. Calyx-lobes c. 2 mm. long, narrow, acute, ciliolate. Corolla white, tube very short, c. 1 mm. long, lobes c. 2.5 mm. long, the broadest acute. Capsule c. 3 × 2.5 mm., glab., erect to spreading, < 2 × calyx.

DIST.: N. North of c. lat. 36°. Open scrub and forest margins.
