Plants tufted with basal leaves. Inflorescence a panicle, rarely reduced to a single spikelet. Spikelets several-flowered, florets ⚥, rarely male-sterile; rachilla prolonged. Glumes persistent, 1-13-nerved, membranous to chartaceous, ≈ or < spikelet. Lemma usually 7-9-nerved, usually hairy, membranous to coriaceous, bilobed or minutely toothed, lateral lobes awned or awnless, awned from sinus, awn straight or geniculate, with ± twisted column. Stamens 3. Fruit a caryopsis or rarely an achene.
