Ligules membranous, ciliate. Inflorescence a single bilateral raceme with alternate spikelets borne edgeways on and embedded in hollows in the fragile rachis. Spikelets 1-flowered, dorsally compressed, falling entire; florets ⚥. Lower glume 0 or suppressed, well-developed in terminal spikelet; upper glume appressed to rachis, concealing the sunken floret. Lemma membranous, 3-nerved. Caryopsis ellipsoid with free pericarp.
