Setaria sphacelata

ξS. sphacelata (Schumach.) Stapf et C.E.Hubb. ξLarge perennial tufts. Leaf-sheath strongly keeled, glabrous. Panicle spike-like, to 35 cm; each spikelet subtended by 6-10 yellow-brown antrorsely scabrid bristles (c. 5-7 mm). Spikelets c. 3 mm, purplish. Anthers c. 1.5 mm. A South African species cultivated in experimental plots; one specimen was collected at Te Paki in 1972 from sandy soil around other Setaria plants B. J. Hunt 20 Jan 1972 (CHR 224715). It also persists at the Kaikohe Research Station in areas beyond where it was sown (W. Harris in litt.) and probably also at the Whatawhata Research Station (P. Woods pers. comm.).
