Culm nodes densely hairy; internodes sometimes with scattered long fine hairs above and below nodes, basal internodes swollen, bulbous or pear-shaped.

N.: North Auckland and further south in western areas; S.: eastern areas; Ch. A weed of gardens and pasture, in waste ground and often in river beds; lowland to montane.

Naturalised from south-western Europe.
