Onobrychis viciifolia
ζ*Onobrychis viciifolia Scop. ζ*, sainfoin, has been collected as an occasional escape from cultivation in Canterbury and Otago but does not appear to be wild now. A sparsely hairy, erect, perennial herb; lvs imparipinnate; leaflets entire, subsessile, ovate to linear, in 4-12 opposite pairs, 10-30 mm long; stipules free, entire or shortly toothed. Infl. racemose, axillary, long-pedunculate; bracts subtending pedicels ovate-lanceolate; bracteoles subtending calyx linear-lanceolate. Calyx hairy; calyx teeth ± equal with lower 3 closer together, linear- lanceolate, 2-3× as long as tube. Corolla pink with purple veins, 10-12 mm long. Pod hairy, veined, indehiscent, 1-seeded, 5-8 mm long; margin usually with 6-8 teeth each about 1 mm long. Sainfoin has been previously known in N.Z. as O. sativa. (Europe, Asia Minor, 1872).
