Epilobium alsinoides A.Cunn.

Type locality: "Between the Waimate and Keri-Keri Mission Stations, Bay of Islands." Type: K, R. Cunningham, 1833.

Stems us. several, rooting at base, ascending above, ± branched, up to 30 cm. long, us. shorter, pale green, pubescent, becoming ± glab.; branchlets very slender. Lvs opp., floral alt. on petioles ± 1 mm. long. Lamina orbicular to broad-ovate, 5-12 × 4-5 mm., subcoriac., glab.; margins entire or minutely, remotely denticulate. Fls ± 5 mm. diam.; calyx ± = petals, lobes ovate-lanceolate; petals white. Capsules 20-40 mm. long, uniformly grey-pubescent; peduncles (15)-25-50-(70) mm. long, pubescent. Seeds papillose.

DIST.: N., S., St., Ch., Ant. Lowland to montane grassland and open places throughout.

Cunningham distinguishes his 3 spp. as follows: alsinoides loc. cit. 32-Stems ascending, lvs ovate, capsules white-pubescent; atriplicifolium loc. cit. 32-Stems erect, suffruticulose at base, lvs ovate-lanceolate or rhomboid, capsules glab.; haloragifolium loc. cit. 34-Stems erect, lvs ovate-lanceolate, capsules pubescent.
