Key

1
Plant subglab. to very sparsely glandular-pubescent, except achenes and towards apex of scapes; lvs thin, veins quite evident on both surfaces
2
Plant us. distinctly glandular-pubescent in all parts; lvs us. thicker, veins less evident to obscure
3
2
Achenes ± turgid, margins only slightly raised; cauline lvs similar to radical
Achenes distinctly compressed, raised margins prominent; cauline lvs reduced to bracts
3
Plant much-branched, us. > 2 dm. long; lvs, all or most, not < 4 cm. long, cauline ∞
Plant not or sparingly branched, us. not > 1 dm. long; lvs, all or most, not > 25 mm. long, cauline few to 0

4
Scapes slender, ± 5-10 cm. long, distinctly glandular-pubescent; lamina ± 5-15 × 5-10 mm.; capitula 5-7-(10) mm. diam
Scapes rather stout, ± 10-15 cm. long, nearly glab.; lamina ± 15-30 × 7-15 mm.; capitula 7-10 mm. diam.

As here understood a still not well known complex; all forms, except polita, clearly distinct from those of the sinclairii complex by the achenes. Plants ± fragrant. FL. 10-2. FT. 12-4.

Hooker (loc. cit.) described his B. radicata from material collected "Northern Island, Cunningham, Colenso. Middle Island. Lyall". He added a " Var. ß Southern Island, Lyall". Later (Handbk N.Z. Fl. 1864, 138) he described his B. odorata from the Colenso specimens ("Patea village") remarking: "The B. radicata of the Fl. N.Z. was founded partly on this, and partly on specimens of a Brachycome in A. Cunningham's herbarium, which I am now convinced were introduced there by accident, and belong to an Australian species. The name of B. radicata had therefore better be abandoned."

In the type cover of B. odorata at K is one sheet labelled "Brachycome odorata New Zealand Colenso no. 1732. Bellis Novae-Zelandiae W.C." There are several specimens in rather poor order, with fls or empty capitula. The epithet odorata was taken up by Kirk (Stud. Fl. 1899, 260) and Cheeseman (Man. N.Z. Fl. 1925, 909). Davis (loc. cit. 1949, 98) names the whole complex B. radicata and chose as "Haptotype: Patea, Wellington Province. Col. 1732. W. Colenso (A)". The specimens at K cited above are here regarded as including the type of both B. radicata and B. odorata. The specimens in A are quite comparable and probably from the same gathering. The following key is tentative:
