Echinochloa oryzoides
ξE. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch ξOne specimen (CHR 21099) consists of a slender plant c. 30 cm. Ligular area glabrous. Panicles 2.5-6 cm, slender; racemes secund, short, c. 1 cm. Spikelets c. 3.5 mm, pale cream. Upper glumes cuspidate. Lower floret: lemma awned; awns 2-4 mm. Upper floret: lemma ovate-elliptic; caryopses immature. Another specimen (CHR 22597), consisting of the upper parts of culms, is similar, but has larger panicles to 10 cm, bearing close-set racemes c. 2 cm; spikelets 4 mm; awns 10-20 mm; caryopses c. 2.5 × 2 mm. This Eurasian species has been twice collected at Tauranga M. Hodgkins 5.1938 (CHR 21099) and M. Hodgkins April 1939 (CHR 22597) but there are no later records.
