Eucalyptus piperita

ζ*E. piperita Smith

ζ*E. piperita Smith ζ* has been collected wild in Auckland and the Pongakawa Valley, Bay of Plenty. It is easily distinguished from other naturalised eucalypts in N.Z. by the 6-8 mm long, urn-shaped frs and prominently rostrate operculum c. = hypanthium. E. piperita is really an ash not a peppermint gum, although it does have the typical interlaced fibrous bark and scent of the peppermints. N.Z. material can be referred to  subsp. urceolaris (Maiden et Blakely) L. Johnson et Blaxell. (N.S.W., 1884).
