Lectotype: New Zealand [probably Bay of Islands], J.D.Hooker – BM [fide Galloway (1985a: 107): annotated in Thomas Taylor's hand "Cenomyce capitellata Tayl."]. Isolectotypes – BM, FH-TAYLOR, FH-TUCK (Ahti 1993: 70).

Description : Flora (1985: 107).

Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow or K−, C−, KC+ yellow, Pd+ yellow or Pd−, UV; containing usnic acid, either ±squamatic acid (major) and ±consquamatic acid (minor), or ±thamnolic acid (major), ±barbatic acid in apothecia (Archer 1986a).

Canterbury (Mt Binser, N of Hakataramea Pass, Black Hills Rakaia Valley,), Otago (Canyon Creek Ahuriri Valley, Haast Pass, Ocean Peak Humboldt Mts, Theatre Flat Rockburn, Turret Head Mt Earnslaw, Remarkables, Hector Mts, Garvie Mts, Rock & Pillar Ra., Mt Misery, Mt Cargill), Southland (Lake Gunn, Awarua Bog). St: A: C: Essentially a grassland species from s.l. to 2200 m. Known also from Australia (Archer 1986a, 1992b; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Cladonia capitellata is characterised by: the areolate, yellowish cortex. It is discussed further in Archer (1986a, 1992b).
