Coprosma foetidissima J.R.Forst. & G.Forst.
Type locality: Queen Charlotte Sound. Type: P ? Recorded also for Campbell Id by Hooker and Chatham Id by Kirk. It has not been again observed in either island.
Shrub or tree up to 3-(6) m. tall, us. open-branched. Branches rather brittle, bark dark brown; branchlets glab. Lvs foetid when bruised, on slender narrowly winged petioles ± 8-15 mm. long. Stipules truncate, but produced into a us. conspicuous long denticle (subsidiary denticles may be present); ciliolate, with tufts of unequal hairs at tips. Lamina membr. to subcoriac., obovate to oblong to broadly ovate (several forms may be on one plant), obtuse, ± apiculate to mucronulate, (20)-30-50 × (10)-14-20 mm. Reticulations of veins evident, at least below. Fls solitary, terminal on branchlets. ♂ without calyx; corolla c. 10 mm. long, subcampanulate, lobes 5-7, acute, ± = tube; stamens us. 5-7. ♀ with minute calyx-teeth; corolla tubular, slightly flaring, lobes 4-5, short, subacute. Drupe pale to full orange, oblong, 7-10 mm. long.
DIST.: N., S., St., A. Coastal to subalpine forest, shrubland, grassland (occ.) from Moehau southwards.
C. affinis Hook. f. Fl. Antarct. 1, 1844, 21 was described from plants collected "on the mountains Lord Auckland's Id." There is one piece with lvs ± 4-5 × 1·5-2 mm. The status remains uncertain.
C. sagittata Col. in T.N.Z.I. 31, 1899, 270 was described from plants collected in "Forests near Dannevirke (barren); 1892: W. C. Slopes of Ruahine Mountain-range; 1898, Mr. H. Hill." Colenso observes: "A species near C. foetidissima, but differing in several characters, particularly in its peculiar long linear anthers apiculate and sharply sagittate produced." I have not found specimens.
