Ranunculus chordorhizos

Type locality: Macaulay River, alt. 1500 m. Type: K, J. Haast, 1862, no. 719.

Short stout glab. fleshy herb up to 8 cm. tall; stock short (rarely up to 10 cm. long) ± 1-2 cm. diam., hard; main roots long, fleshy. Lvs all radical, on stout petioles up to 5 cm. long with broad glab. sheaths; lamina 1-2 × 1·5-3 cm., suborbicular, 3-partite to base or sts 3-foliolate; divisions obovate to cuneate, abruptly subacute, incised or ± deeply lobed. Scape 1-2 cm. long, 1-fld (rarely 2-3-fld); nude or with bract narrow-oblong to linear ± 1 cm. long, toothed at apex. Fls 2-2.5 cm. diam.; sepals 5, narrow-oblong, 5-7 mm. long; petals obovate-oblong, rounded at apex, bright to pale yellow, ± 1·5 cm. long; gland 1, near base. Fruiting heads ± globose, 5-7 mm. diam.; receptacle globose to broad-cylindric. Achenes glab., turgid, not margined, obliquely ovoid, ± 2 mm. long; style subulate, slightly curved, excentric, up to 4 mm. long.

DIST.: S. Higher montane to subalpine fellfield from lat. 43° to 45°.
