Ovary superior, 2-5-loculed; placentae axile; ovules us. 2 per locule, pend.; stigma capitate to discoid. Fr. baccate to capsular; seeds often winged. Shrubs or trees with lvs us. alt., compound, exstipulate. Mostly tropical trees or shrubs; some 80 genera and 800 spp.
