Fls us. terminal, solitary to cymosely arranged, perfect, regular, 3-5-merous; sepals imbricate; petals yellow, imbricate or contorted; stamens ∞, hypog., often united into groups of fascicles; anthers 2-celled, opening longitudinally. Ovary 1-3-5-celled; styles 3-5, us. free; ovules ∞, axile, sts pend. Fr. a capsule or baccate, 3-5-loculed; seeds without endosperm. Herbs, shrubs, or trees with resinous sap, lvs opp. or whorled, simple, entire, exstipulate, dotted with pellucid glands. Some 8 genera and c. 350 spp.
