Description : Flora (1985: 614).
Chemistry : Cortex K−; medulla K+ yellow, C−, KC−, Pd+ orange; containing constictic, cryptostictic, stictic, norstictic (tr.), ±menegazziaic (tr.) and usnic acids.
S: Nelson (St Arnaud Ra.), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass, Cass, Porter's Pass, Waimakariri riverbed, Mt Peel), Otago (Kakanui Ra., Poolburn Reservoir, Lake Onslow, Old Man Ra., Gem Lake, Umbrella Mts, Horse Ra., Mt Watkin, Flagstaff Hill, Dunedin, Maungatua). On rocks (schist and greywacke), occasionally on broken glass and colonising ceramic insulators on fallen power poles. Known also from Australia, Thailand, and Brazil (Elix 1994s: 266; Eliasaro & Adler 2002; Wolseley et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Xanthoparmelia mougeotina is characterised by: the saxicolous (rarely on glass, china) habit; its small, ±stellate-radiate thallus in ±semicircular rosettes (centres dark, margins pale); narrow lobes; small, delicate, simple isidia; and stictic acid as the major medullary compound.
