Chemistry : Cortex K−; medulla K−, C−, KC−, Pd−; containing 4- O -methylhypoprotocetraric, notatic, ±hypoprotocetraric, ±isonotatic (tr.), ±subnotatic (tr.), ± 4- O -demethylnotatic and usnic acids.
S: Otago (Glendhu Bluff Lake Wanaka). On rocks and soil; montane to subalpine. Known also from SE Australia and Tasmania (Elix 1994s: 273; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Xanthoparmelia notata is characterised by: the saxicolous/terricolous habit; the distinctive maculae (×10 lens) on the upper surface; a black lower surface; and the medullary chemistry.
