Xanthoparmelia petriseda

Holotype: New Zealand. South I. Otago: Ram Rock, Waikouaiti, J.S. Thomson T1922 [W61] – W. Isotype – OTA 29517.

Description : Flora (1985: 306–307 – as Neofuscelia petriseda).

Chemistry : Cortex K−, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K+ yellow-orange, C−, KC+ orange, Pd+ red-orange, UV−; containing protocetraric and fumarprotocetraric acids.

S: Canterbury (Port Hills, Christchurch), Otago (Poolburn Reservoir, Old Man Ra., Rock & Pillar Ra., Fruitlands, Roxburgh, Ram Rock, Maungatua). On alpine or subalpine rocks in grassland. Known also from alpine rocks in Victoria (Elix 2003a).

Xanthoparmelia petriseda is closely related to X. stygiodes from which it differs mainly in the longer, more discrete (although loosely entangled) and more dissected lobes, and by the very loosely adnate thalli. Another sympatric species somewhat similar to X. petriseda is X. epheboides, which is distinguished by its much smaller and thinner lobes and its dark-brown or black lower surface.
