Xanthoparmelia subhosseana is distinguished by: the saxicolous habit; the pustulate isidia and the characteristic medullary spot test reactions. X. waiporiensis also has pustulate isidia but is K−, Pd−. The species is often sympatric with the non-isidiate X. squamans.
